Welcome to your online discussion of All American Boys!
Together with members of your book group, you’ll be reading All American Boys by Brendan Kiely and Jason Reynolds over the next several weeks. Although you're not required to take notes while you read, it would be wise to keep track of important events and characters for your own clarification. You are, however, expected to participate regularly and thoughtfully in an online discussion of FOUR essential questions.
Here's how it works:

ReplyDeleteprejudice affects young peoples lives because the older people in the young peoples lives have lived through events and seen things and formed opinions and those opinions over time create single stories. I think this is what happened with quinn when the police man beats him up badly because he thought the boy was stealing. this could be because hes seen younger people steal alot or just because of the neighborhood that he is in. younger people still are innocent to some of the things that the older people have experienced. This is just my opinion from what i've read.

DeleteOne example in this book that shows the notion "A Single Story" is when the police man beat up quinn. the police man had a single story and didn't stop to think of any other situation but that quinn was stealing. in this event quinn (when he was arrested) was not trying to resist and he wanted to be comfortable but the man thought that he was uneducated and undisciplined. so he beat him. thinking that this might work to "Fix" or "discipline" quinn.

DeleteI am with you on this I think that some police may be crul towards black people but we still dont know the whole story to what happen between Rashad and Paul it will be interesting to find out what really happened and what will happen later on in the book
DeletePrejudice affects the youngs peoples in our book All American Boys and the reason for that in this is when the police beat Rashad after the party and now he has internal bleeding its going around social media and there is a vid that went around the school

Deletethis is a good point. i think that almost 95% of cops have good intensions. but there are some that had done the wrong thing for one reason or another.
DeleteAll of you are right. This is exactly why we need to be aware of other's perspectives. It's important that we step in someone else's shoes so that we can start to dispel these single stories. Is the whole second half of the year coming together for you?
DeleteI belive that prejudice affects the younger genoration because all they grow up hearing and seeing is police beating civilions and seeing that makes you hate the police.
ReplyDeleteI agree in what you say here, that alot of racism is done right away but taught over time by children watching and seeing things around them.

DeleteI think this book shows a lot of prejudice. In this book this affects the lives of many kids. it makes there community very unfair and unsafe. an example of this is when Quinn was nearly beaten to death by the police officer. I think this shows an unsafe element to the community. also in that event the police officer was trying to arrest Quinn had thought that he was trying to resist, even though he wasn't. i think that right there shows a false stereotype that the police man had thought was true.

DeleteI am going to predict that there may be a punishment for Paul or maybe we will find out what really happened between him and Rashad during their arrestting and idk what Pauls reason was for the beating of Rashad i think we will find out
ReplyDeleteIn the book justice and courage are kinda related in the way that it takes a lot to stand of up for someone in a situation like Quinn is in. this means that if someone were to say that what the police man did was wrong, they might get targeted them selves.

DeleteI agree with you because it takes a lot of courage to do the right thing. Paul might need to stand up for what he did and admit he was wrong or (I think) Quinn will stand up to Paul.
DeletePeople are often prejudice because of stereo types that are 9 times out of 10 wrong. they might feel threatened or scared. this might not be someone who is raced but someone who had been living in a world of false accusations. for example, a basic one would be when the cop had thought Rashad had been trying to resist when really he was just in pain.

DeleteI agree with you that a lot of people have a lot of racial profiling in their sight on people they see. Paul in our book could have been doing what he felt was right or it was racial conflict we don't know .
DeletePeople are often prejudice because of past experiences. I think Paul was prejudice because of what happened to Quinn with Marc. Quinn explains this on page 140 . Quinn was getting bullied and once he told Paul he went and beat him up . because Marc was black Paul could have created a single story from Marc. This happens a lot in our society, an example could be 911. a lot of hate crimes towards innocent muslims because some of them were bad.

DeleteI agree just because one person in a specific race does something does not mean that they all do you there are a lot of islamic taerrorist but there are also alot of good muslims and same with black there are some law biding black people
DeleteJustice and Courage are related because it takes alot of courage to do the right thing. in my book paul beat up an african american becuase he thought he was stealing. its going to take alot of courage for paul to come up to what he did wrong. and its going to get justice for the innocent african american rashad.

ReplyDeleteI agree with you here. Quinn got a lot of crap for wearing this shirt but I think your right when you said he was surprised by the outcome. I think Quinn was trying to find a resolution for himself with this whole problem and this was the only way he could kinda come to peace about the subject.
DeleteIn my opinion i think the author is trying to get more out of his message than saying that "prejudice is bad." i think the book is more about how we would fight back against it and how the words actions that people try to hurt us with shouldn't get to us. this shows more of justice and courage relationship. Because my prediction is that there is gonna be some kind of protest or movement in the end of the book.
ReplyDeleteI see what your saying here, something I didn't think about. Where the author might not be just saying that prejudice is around but showing us that we have a voice and we need to use it when unjust situations occur.
DeleteReally nicely done with these conversations. You all are bringing up some good points about race, prejudice, and courage. Two things: (1) use evidence from the text; (2) edit your posts.
ReplyDeletei also think that the author is trying to say and show more about how "prejudice is bad" when our characters see bad things that happen and they want to step in but thay know they will become a bad guy to the law enforcement and seeing your friends being treated this way when our character wants to do something but cant and in the end i belive that he will find some way like William said about them starting a protest at the end of the book.

DeleteYeah I am glad to see that this book ended happily instead of another event. I also agree that the author did really bring light to prejudice and gives a great example of how this could turn out in todays society.

ReplyDeleteAs I read this book I see alot of connection to "prejudice people" I feel this book is trying to show us and put a spot light on these subjects that might be very touchy to talk or even think about. I my self have never even wanted to think about it because of how touchy the subject of prejudice is. In this book People are prejudice by what they see and/or have experienced. Paul is on the aggressive side and that puts him in a bad spot and acts in aggression towards a black kid. prejudice is a view point and as far as i've read i can predict that paul shows prejudice through what he's seen and what he has experienced through past events with black people.

DeleteI think in this book the main idea that the author is trying to get across has a lot to do with courage. in todays world most African Americans might feel very threatened in a lot of situations. whether they are doing something bad or not most fear for there lives. the book shows a lot of relevant issues like this. for example the cop not just beating Rashad but falsely accusing hi of stealing, and even if he was it would have been very unnecessary to beat him.
ReplyDeleteI see what you mean where in this situation in this book things got two sided quickly and blame was quickly thrown out and pointed fingers at both people. I think your right when African Americans are very threatened in todays world where that subtle racism is still in affect and its going to take a lot of time.
DeletePeople are prejudice because they do what they believe to be doing right. Paul does this exactly when the store scene went on. "I saw him push over the old lady and stealing the chips so I went to help the lady out". Paul says this. we know this might not be true because of how the event really went down and how Paul's real perspective was. Prejudice is real and it comes from perspective, I think this is said all through the book.
ReplyDeletePrejudice effects the lives of young people because young people are getting assulted by prejudice because of their own skin color or their type of "style". this is shown in the book when Black and White kids alike marched together and marched through the streets, laid down in from of the police station and read the names of "absent" kids. this is one way that prejudice effects the lives of young people because young people bring it to a personal level and involve themselves more so they can get a realization racism and what it really means.
ReplyDeleteThis book represents the thought of a "single story" because once the situation between Paul and Rashad got very public where people were posting and commenting about Rashad was wearing. They were judging him on his clothes and from the things they've seen in past events with "Thugs" sagging their pants they make that single story with Rashad. But I also think the same thing can happen with police where sometimes people always think the police man is racist or a racist jury. It can happen on both sides but the racial profiling of a black man is more present in social media and the news.
ReplyDeleteI think that this book covers a topic of stero types of white police officers and block kids we all know how this stero story the white officer hits the black kid and we are always so quick to jump to the cop is rasist because that is the easiest thing to do in todays socity and the exsample here is paul and Rashad sure it was not the right thing to do for paul but no one even tryed to learn more about what happened and thats my point

ReplyDeleteI belive that people are prejudiced because the way they are raised for example if you are raised hearing from your parents that cops are killers and they beat black people that your going to not like cops, but it you are raised hearing that blacks are dangerous that your going to think that way and live a rasist life. Prejudice can affect anyone for nearly any reason, often for reasons that they can’t control. Prejudice isn’t the fault of the person experiencing it, but the fault of the person that has developed the prejudice and hasn’t corrected their behavior. Now in relation to young people, this is often encountered in school, usually by peers, whether on purpose or not. It is often learned from parents, either by offhand remarks that they may make or lessons that they try to teach their kids which come off worse. These unintentional prejudices come out and effect other because most of the time in school, these young people either don’t know the meaning of what they’re doing or do, and intentionally doing it to be cruel. This can affect everyone negatively, especially when its about something that they can’t control, negatively affecting self esteem and self worth.
ReplyDeletePeople are often prejudiced due to negative past experiences or misconceptions, either developed while they’re young or from, as I said, a negative experience. People often experience prejudice through unequal treatment when compared to people that the offender would see as more of an equal to themselves. Misconceptions can stem from misrepresented reporting of situations that relate to people with similar characteristics or preexisting stereotypes.
ReplyDeleteJustice and courage are intertwined because it takes courage to fight for justice. If someone does something unjust, you have to have courage that you’re doing the right thing in order to call them out on their actions. You need to have the courage to stand up for what you believe in and what you consider just, along as knowing that letting unjust actions go without consequences will most likely lead to more of the same, or sadly, worse actions, either from the individual or others, because by not standing up for it, it shows that it must not be all that important in the first place.
